Route Elevation Profile

Calculate hiking difficulty and estimated completion time using Naismith's rule.

How It Works

Naismith's rule is a classic hiking time estimation formula developed in 1892: allow 5 km per hour plus 1 hour for every 600 meters of elevation gain. This provides a baseline for healthy adults on established trails with moderate loads.

Difficulty Ratings

Easy: Grade under 5%, suitable for beginners. Moderate: 5-10% grade, some fitness required. Hard: 10-15% grade, good fitness needed. Extreme: Over 15% grade, experienced hikers only, significant exertion.

💡 TipNaismith's rule assumes good trail conditions and moderate load. Add 20-30% for difficult terrain (loose rock, thick vegetation), bad weather, or high altitude. Subtract 20% if you're exceptionally fit.
